Weed library - Thistle - Variegated (Silybum marianum)


Variegated thistle is an autumn and winter germinating biennial herb.

The rosette leaves are lobed with shiny margins. The upper surface is a shiny bright green leaf with distinctive white variegations on it.

It grows up to 3m tall producing leaves alternatively arranged on the stem. It has a purple flower.

Control Tips


  • Spray when the plant is actively growing
  • Plants in the rosette stage are easier to control than more advanced plants

  • DO NOT spray when the plant is stressed (i.e. Drought, physical damage, insect damage, frost)
