Tips to keep your pet safe when spraying weeds

None of us like the thought of using weed killers especially around areas where our pets live and play.

Most weed killers and herbicides we are likely to use to control weeds around our home and property have low toxicity to mammals and pose little threat if used responsibly and in accordance with label instructions.

As weed killers are different and instructions vary, always read the product label prior to using. The product label contains complete instructions relating to handling, use, and application.

Some handy precautions to help keep both yourself and your pets safe when spraying weeds are:-

  • Always read the product label and use the recommended safety equipment. Always follow the instructions relating to your situation
  • Remove animals from the area  prior to spraying the weeds.
  • Also remove any toys, food & water bowls, or bedding if it is likely to come in contact with the spray
  • Do now allow animals to re-enter the area until the spray solution has completely dried
  • If you have grazing animals, follow any withholding period stated on the product label
  • Be aware that some weeds are toxic to animals such as horses and that some sprayed weeds can become more palatable as they die.
  • Use only well maintained and correctly calibrated spraying equipment and comply with label instructions. Failure to do so may result in an incorrect dose being applied and also the potential for spray mist drift if the sprayer nozzles and pressure settings are not set correctly
  • For more information about sprayer calibration and application refer to the  Spray Equipment & Application section in the Weed Force Library.

Please note that the information above is general in nature and does not constitute advice nor recommendation. You personally are responsible to read the product labels to determine suitabilty and appropriate use patterns for your situation.
